This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The challenge facing my students when we begin studying astronomy and looking to outer space is grasping the concept of distance. Through telescope use, they will see how we can bring objects we study closer.
My students comprise grades 9-12 and attend a public high school.
They are a diverse group with 65% qualifying for free and reduced lunch. The same percentage of students speak English as a second language. While facing many challenges, they are enthusiastic and eager to learn.
My Project
We will begin our astronomy study close to Earth looking first to the Moon. From there, we will move to the other planets in our solar system and beyond. We will learn about scale and distance, as well as the tools and techniques astronomers use. As we discover nebulae and other galaxies, we will make our telescopes and discover how they work. Through viewing the moon during the daytime and viewing planets, nebulae, stars and galaxies at night, my students will discover the amazing cosmos. Throughout the unit, Bill Nye's video will further illustrate the principals of astronomy.
This project is important to my students because they thrive and excel when the curriculum is hands-on.
The level of connection and understanding is far greater during activities of this kind.
