This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Look at how I did my Math problem!"
I am currently teaching Math in a second grade classroom. A majority (60%) of my students are English Language learners. My school is a public, inner city school in a large urban area of California where 100% of the students receive reduced/free lunch. It is a school with limited technology that will not improve in the near future due to severe state and local budget cuts.
Many of my students are English Language learners who need visuals to gain a deep understanding of Math concepts. I currently only have an overhead projector in my classroom which is ineffective when students want to show their work and explain the strategies they used.
A document reader will allow my students to project their work for all to see! Not only will students gain confidence by explaining their work, they will develop oral language skills, and learn math strategies from each other. The document reader will give my students to opportunity to be the "teacher" and to learn that there is NO ONE WAY to solve math problems. I have found that when students are "teaching" the others become more confident in taking charge of their learning and understanding. It will also provide visuals for those who have difficulty with oral directions and explanations.
You will make it possible for my students to share their math strategies with one another! You will help in their oral language skills, develop their confidence, and help those that need visuals in order to gain true understanding of the math concepts. By having the document reader in my classroom, I will also be able gain information of my students about their understanding of the math concepts and demonstrate activities and strategies to deepen their understanding.
