Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach science lab to 1st - 8th grade students in our school; roughly 850 students. Students in 2nd and 5th grade study change over time as it relates to organisms. 7th grade students study ecology. All three grades could greatly use an in-class ecosystem to study and work with as they learn these concepts. We are an inner city school in an urban area; my students have little experience with nature and especially with animals in nature. They have not had first hand experiences with the intricacies and diversity of an environment. They have not been able to study/observe change of a plant or animal over time - such as a school year. Their time with nature has been fleeting and spotty. I want to create students who have solid concept knowledge and are able to understand how their science learning can be applied to their community and life. Using this river ecosystem my 5th grade students can journal each week their observations of this ecosystem. We can compare growth, changes in temperature, humidity, movement of animals and other data collection suggestions by students. 5th graders can then graph this data and analyze it. Students will also do activities to test their neighborhood/school environment as well as survey plant and animal life around school. We will compare their outdoor data with this river ecosystem and will discuss the differences in data. We will also compare the ability to "study" our in-class ecosystem versus periodic trips outdoors. They should find it easier to observe our classroom animals because we know where to always find them! We know we're always looking at the same animal. This ecosystem would bring a real ecosystem close up experience to students; for an entire school year. change over time is a large science concept that connects to each science discipline. The environment and ecology are topics necessary for students to care about in order to become mature adult citizens. Their experiences in science lab would help them learn concepts and mature as citizens.
