Could you read me a story? The answer for so many of my students is, "No!" I teach in a "high poverty" school, in Louisiana. Many of my 4th grade students come from low income families, some live in poverty.
They don't have books at home to read and in many cases have been brought up without anyone reading to them. I believe the more opportunities I can provide them to listen to a story, the better chance I have of developing a love of reading in them.
I need a listening center complete with a cd and cassette player so my students can hear a variety of stories read to them with wonderful expression and voice, while I am teaching guided reading. As students listen to the story and follow along in the book not only will they be hearing proper English, expression, and fluency but they will become more familiar with vocabulary, the spelling of words, and punctuation.
Your donations will give my students the opportunity to become better readers and help instill a love of reading in them. My students deserve every opportunity to succeed!
