Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Kindergarten students are a racially mixed group of 5 & 6 year old special education students, regular education students, and English Language Learners. This diverse population of children provides a beautiful challenge for me every school year to bring them together as a family, and learn to love school.
Kindergarten children love to explore and discover. Our science center is a place they get to visit during their weekly structured "Science Center" time, or for free exploration on a daily basis during "Choice Time." We need these materials to support both of these important parts of our curriculum.
These microscopes, magnifiers, and binoculars will help my students take a closer look at things that may be out of reach, or out of sight. They will be able to peer closely at butterfly wings during our insect life cycles unit, carry magnifiers with them on neighborhood walks to look at leaves, and proudly wear the binoculars around their necks when we take a field trip to the nearby Nature Center. The mirrors will allow them to investigate their own faces for self portraits during our "All About Me" unit, or to reflect light around the room when discovering shadows and light.
When I define the Science Center to my 5 & 6-year-old students, I simply say, "In this center we will explore why things are they way they are." Having these materials will draw my students into the Science Center to take a closer look at the complicated world around them and begin to ask "Why?" You can help spark this love of exploration with your donation!
