Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What do you do when your student comes up to you and tells you that he/she cannot find a book in the library to read because they are too hard? In my third grade class, this is an every day occurrence. I teach in an urban school that is over 100 years old. All of my students receive free lunch. Many come from single family households trying to make ends meet the best they can. My students live in such a high poverty area that their families struggle to meet everyday expenses, so forget the extras, like books on their child's reading level.
With tremendous budget cuts, I will not be getting any new books to put into my library this year. In fact over the last five years, any new books added to my library were bought by me. I am able to buy some new books each year, but not enough to cover the need of 30 eager students. I have books that seem to be favorites year after year, but they are taped and stapled so that they can hopefully make it through another year. You should see the face of the child when he/she tells me that a page or pages are missing. They are so hungry to read and I want to give them the opportunity to do just that. Some of my students have learning disabilities, such as autism and processing difficulties, and I would like to be able to offer a variety of books for them to choose from as well.
But this is where you, the generous donors of Donorschoose, come in. I would like to provide my students with many different choices of books on a continuum of levels so that my students would have many books to choose from. Their love for reading would flourish because they would be able to move through the different levels as they became stronger and more fluent readers. And best of all, their self-esteem would soar knowing that they were reading books and their comprehension was increasing. My students would enjoy reading the wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books while they were strengthening their skills each and every day.
Statistics say that if a child struggles with reading by the end of third grade, it will be a constant struggle their entire life. The students look to me to be able to fix all their problems. But the truth is, I am unable to do this alone. With your generous support, you can help each one of my thirty students this year, and my future students to come, increase their reading skills so that they may enjoy and love reading instead of feeling frustrated by it. There is nothing like looking into a child's face after they have read a book, their face beaming with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Please consider helping me to help them become lifelong learners and allow their love of reading to flourish.
