My Students
My students LOVE to read but need books at a personalized reading level. When a book is too challenging, students spend too much time decoding each word and don't ever see the big story. All components of reading come together when students can read text without struggling on each word.
My students are the most amazing, adorable 1st graders anywhere.
They LOVE school and they love learning. Our school community is inner city, high-poverty with lots of struggles. But children everywhere need the same thing - to be met where they are and take baby steps toward their full potential.
My Project
These resources will put full color books, real books, into the hands of my students. These will be books that are leveled to each individual reader at their independent and instructional levels so they can practice fluency and comprehension instead of decoding each word. At this age, students haven't mastered the skill of silent reading, so whisper phones will help keep noise level down as all students become immersed in their own reading.
Teaching children to read, and to love to do so, is the basis for creating lifelong learners.
