This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a 3rd grade class, where the majority of my student are English Language Learners. Our community is a very low socio-economic area. Many of my students are struggling to learn the English language.
Students entering the 3rd grade should be able to accurately read 70 words a minute. By the end of 3rd grade students should be able to read 110 words a minute. Research shows that students who are not reading at a benchmark level by the end of the year will most likely not succeed in their school careers. Most of my students are reading at a level far below this level.
My students are tested weekly on their reading fluency. I only have (1) stopwatch and can only test one child at a time. With each student having their own timer, they will be able to track their progress daily and graph their results.
Your help will enable my students to monitor their reading fluency daily. You will be able to let them see how their reading fluency is improving day by day.
More than half of students from low‑income households
