My students need a larger and more diverse collection of books in their classroom library to provide more choice with a wider selection of texts.

My Students
As my students walk in the the room in the morning, the once empty desks transform to a sea of diversity. Beginning our academic day (and throughout), I ask these little people, "Shall we learn about...?" They reply in eager unison, "We shall!" I look about, seeing little faces ready, willing and able to to tackle the next task that awaits them.
I teach at a school in Los Angeles with a 60% Title 1 population, and almost half of my class are English Language Learners, some of whom have recently been reclassified.
Regardless, all my students know they are a part of our special community and that everyone brings something unique to the table. This side or that of the socio-economical spectrum, they are equals and deserve an equitable education.
My Project
Children need books. Children need books they are interested in. Children need books they can decode and comprehend. I am slowly growing my classroom library to meet the needs of each individual student. As a part of Reader's Workshop, my students go "book-shopping" (borrowing) for the books they will be reading for the week. They get to choose books at their reading level from different genres. "Choice" is a key element in my program.
Books open up a world of wonder for children.
Having access to a variety of genres at reading levels for every student increases chances for each of them to fall in love with reading. Literacy is required for students to be successful across the curriculum; success is what I desire for every child. A well-stocked classroom library certainly lends itself to promoting childhood literacy.
