Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a literature class for 9th-12th grade students in the state of Florida. My class teaches literature and writing, using real-world applications. My students come from different backgrounds. Most of the students speak different languages with English as a second language.

My students are in a high-level program, but write below grade level. I have to try to elevate their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills to "grade level" so that they can continue on in the program. I don't want to lose any more students from my program because they feel that the work is too difficult for them. I have seen that the more passion they have for a project, the more they are willing to work. Projects that they especially like are photo-essays that are documentary-style. They find a problem, take pictures, describe the problem, and convince us how to solve the problem through their writing. Most of my students jump-started clubs & organizations that have really turned out well due to this project. However, some of my students don't have the cameras, printers, ink, and overall supplies to complete their projects.

I would LOVE an in-class digital camera and printer that the students would be able to "check out" and use during school time or over the weekend. This helps my students who do not have access to cameras and printers, which can get expensive. It also gives my more artistic students a chance to shine!

Your help will make it possible for my students to publish more professional work, integrating literature & writing with their own, personal world. Your help will empower my students to work hard and churn out projects that they will feel proud of.
