Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple miles away from USC (go Trojans!) We are a Title I school. Our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Almost all of our students are minority students and English Learners.
We are a Transitional Kindergarten - 2nd grade classroom.
My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Students with autism face challenges with social skills, nonverbal and verbal communication, and may exhibit challenging behaviors.
My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom.
Our students come from different backgrounds, cultures, and have different likes/dislikes and needs but in our room, we are all learners. Each day opens us to new experiences and adventures. Our days together are never the same. Their learning differences and remarkable characteristic traits are exactly what make them so special.
My Project
When you think about worksheets in a classroom, you may remember or think about a white sheet of paper with endless black ink but in Room 3, everything is colorful. This is planned and purposeful because colors captivate attention, especially my students with special needs. I am running very low on ink and having more Epson EcoTank black and colored ink would allow me to make more materials for my students.
Presentation is key for my students.
They need colorful print outs because it captures their attention. They often appear distracted by internal and/or external factors and something as small as color on their paper can reel them in. Colors in pictures and text is a form of visual scaffolding; visual scaffolding provides comprehensible input. Colored materials make content more accessible for my students.
