My Students
I am lucky to be the co-coordinator for my district's Summer Migrant Education Program. Our summer program works with the children of migrant agricultural workers for multiple districts surrounding my own. All of these students qualify for free lunch, and many live in poverty while moving from district to district and even state to state multiple times a year. A lot of our families also speak primarily Spanish, which creates more hurdles. Due to the pandemic, we will most likely have to use distance learning for our summer program this year.
We are trying to find ways to make our summer program fun and engaging even though we can't be there in-person with our students.
Many of our students have limited resources and have been struggling already with distance learning. We need to motivate them to participate in the summer program so we can work to help them get caught up with their peers.
My Project
Last year was the first year for our Summer Migrant Program. One of the biggest hits was Legos that we were able to borrow from the Midwest Migrant Educational Resource Center. With having to shift to distance learning this year, we are not able to borrow Legos for our students to use at home. We are hoping to get individual Lego starter kits for our students to use at home and keep as their own.
Having their own set of Legos will allow us to do so many fun, engaging activities with our students even when we are all separated.
Students can make a scene to write a story about. We can give them challenges to build different structures.
Based on what we already know about distance learning, it will be a challenge to keep our students interested and motivated in learning, especially during the summer. With your help, we can supply students with these Legos so we can do fun, engaging projects.
