This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Bilingual students face unique challenges, especially when learning English. Many of them spend long hours at school, including extended after-school programs to improve their language skills. Providing snacks can play a significant role in supporting these students' academic success.
First, snacks help maintain students' energy levels.
Learning a new language is mentally demanding, and without proper nutrition, students can experience fatigue, making it difficult to concentrate. Providing snacks ensures they remain alert and focused during lessons, helping them retain information and engage in activities like reading and conversation practice.
Moreover, many bilingual students come from low-income backgrounds, where consistent access to food may be limited. Offering snacks alleviates hunger, allowing students to focus on learning rather than worrying about when or where they will eat. This gesture also shows students that the school cares about their well-being, fostering a positive, supportive environment.
Lastly, snacks provide an opportunity for students to connect with one another. Sharing food in after-school programs can help build a sense of community, allowing students to practice English in informal, social settings. This interaction promotes confidence and comfort in using the language.
In conclusion, offering snacks to bilingual students helps meet their physical, emotional, and academic needs. It ensures they stay energized, feel cared for, and can focus on learning, ultimately improving their chances of success in language acquisition and academic achievement.
