My students need engaging books that will challenge their reading skills and cultivate a love for literature.

My Students
In its newly departmentalized format, my classroom serves the reading and writing needs of our entire 5th and 6th grade population.
Students are full of creativity, personality, and resilience at our Title 1 school, where 100% of them qualify for free meals.
On a recent school-wide survey, 90% of our students expressed that they "believe you can change your intelligence, no matter who you are." One of our school's core values is Grit, and this reflects in our students' optimistic attitudes toward learning in the face of major challenges like poverty, homelessness, abandonment, emotional trauma, and special needs.
While students recognize and are invested in their need for strong literacy skills, our class library is sorely outdated and fails to engage their diverse backgrounds and interests. Together as a class, we made a list of series they are excited to read and topics they would love to learn more about.
Now is a critical time to foster my students' love of reading, to ignite their imaginations, and to inspire them to write their own stories (literally and figuratively). Your contribution will help make that possible.
My Project
Studies show that daily reading is the fastest, most effective way to boost reading levels, vocabulary and comprehension. As a departmentalized reading teacher, I only have 75 minutes of instruction with each of my classes daily.
Providing them with easy access to diverse and engaging books that they are excited to read at home will help ensure that they are able to progress steadily toward their literacy goals--and given the stakes, the urgency for this is sky-high.
I have requested used books in good condition to cut costs, maximize the impact of your dollar, and support the eco-sustainably. Frugality and conservation are also values that I instill in my students.
As the oldest kids at our school, the 5th and 6th grade students who benefit from this library will also set an example to scholars in lower grades of strong literacy skills and enthusiasm for reading, causing a ripple effect that could compound for generations.
