Logically Thinking Through Recess

My students need engaging STEM games such as Lego building kits, Krypto, and Roller Coaster Challenge.

My Students

My students attend a Title I school, so a majority of the students come from families with low incomes. Some of them are learning English as their second language and having hands-on and very visual learning experiences are best to really help them get the vocabulary necessary to be successful in school.

My students are full of excitement about learning and love coming to school!

The students I work with are full of great questions and really care about doing their best. Some of them are dealing with challenges in life, but they are all wonderful kids and a joy to work with!

My Project

I would like to be able to provide my students with some games and activities that will be both engaging and mind-stimulating for them to participate in during times when there is an inside recess due to poor air quality or bad weather, which happens often this time of year. The games I am requesting in this project allow students to think deeply and explore like an engineer.

I recently finished a research project and found that STEM activities helped increase math scores greatly during my teaching.

I figure, if I can provide STEM-type activities they are excited to do and try with their classmates during recess or other appointed times, that brain training will benefit my students even more! I will teach students how to play these games, and then when they have time, I will let them play with these sets and games to encourage creativity and increase teamwork and planning. They can build a roller coaster, try to create a fast Lego vehicle and race them with other classmates, or creatively find a way to make a target number by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing while playing Krypto. Many of these skills are easy to overlook when just focusing on standards in the core, but are essential for a well-rounded, independent-thinking student.
