Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kiddos are loco for literature! Our favorite part of the day is the read-aloud. The kids all sit around in a circle and listen as I read to them. They ask a lot of questions and learn a lot of new words. They just get enamored with the adventures of the characters.

I teach a group of identified Gifted and Talented students.

Our school is in an area of low economic development. The students are mostly Hispanic and for many English is a second language. We have incredibly supportive parents, but often they don't have the means or English-speaking ability to really help their students at home.

My Project

My students need The Snowy Day book and storytelling kit, literature-based math and reading learning centers and a response to literature activity kit. These resources will help me to extend the lessons used with these books to alternative reading skills and even to math. One story could be the source of several different hands-on activities. Not only would this provide new and exciting ways for the children to apply their skills; it will also inspire them to read more. They will be on their way to becoming life-long literature enthusiasts.

The students I work with are very grateful for any opportunities they are given.

They are like little sponges and would just soak up new skills through the use of these materials. You could be responsible for sparking the imagination of a student who might be reluctant to read. These kids have incredible potential, we just need the resources to help us tap into that and send them on their way to success.
