This has been an amazing school year despite a worldwide pandemic and many social concerns. My students have persevered academically, socially, and emotionally. They have been honored with local and statewide construction student of the month achievements, statewide sporting awards, and high honors in academics. Every one of my construction students passed their national testing for construction credentials for year one!
Construction class gives them time, space, and freedom to explore careers in the trades and develop personal interests in construction related skills.
These 9th through 12th graders look forward to spending two hours in my non-traditional class where they can be out of their seats moving around with hands-on learning. As the first female trades teacher in our district, I'm excited to open this opportunity up to all students and am especially excited to help young women feel comfortable and confident learning construction skills.
My Project
With a new group of students entering into construction class next year, they are going to need space to store their gear. Currently, my shop has lockers for ten students. I am expecting up to fifteen additional students next year. All students are required to keep a change of clothes, closed toe shoes, and personal protective equipment in the shop daily. With no more lockers to spare, the newest members of my construction course will not have a spot to keep their personal belongings. Asking them bring those items back and forth daily in their already overweight backpacks is just not a good option for them. This set of lockers will give those students a spot to call their own for two years.
