My Students
The students in my classes are a diverse group from a multitude of backgrounds. Some are from families where they will be the first to attend college while others are from families where paying the monthly bills is a challenge.
All students deserve an opportunity to create skills that they can take with them into the work force or to college.
They are eager for life skills than can help them as they finish high school and move forward in their lives.
My Project
The school shooting at Columbine High School in 1999 forever changed the face of education. We would love a classroom set of the book Columbine by Dave Cullen, one of the first reports on the scene who researched the event for years, to use as a shared nonfiction text for our English classes.
My students have never known a time when there weren't lockdown drills at school.
Exposure to this book will not only provide them with nonfiction text analysis skills, but it will also enlighten them as the purpose and reason behind many of the safety and drill measures in our school. This gripping researched account of one of the worst tragedies in education can ignite a passion for a new genre of text in students.
