Living the Life Cycle of Butterflies

My Students

Science is very difficult to teach without hands on experiences. Students can learn by reading text, but they will remember if they are involved.

My students are passionate about animals.

They have all voluntarily signed up for this course, zoology. These students are dedicated to education and enjoy learning. They excel when given the opportunity, and by incorporating real situations they will appreciate the animal kingdom even more. Although they are high school students, when placed in a situation involving real animals, they return to their childish innocence.

My Project

This kit will include a butterfly larva for each student. The student will be responsible for their animal and care. They will provide food and measure their animal's growth each day. When their larva turns to a pupa, they will place it in a net and time how long the cycle of complete metamorphosis takes. At the end of the life cycle, the student will release their butterfly into the wild. On completion the students should be able to understand the reason for different life stages and the time it takes for an animal to complete its life cycle. We will also talk about migration patterns and genetics of butterflies.

I have done this activity with previous students and they LOVE it.

They are are intrigued and engaged beyond measures. They love caring for the animals and feel a connection to the class. They will remember this experience and share their knowledge with many others.
