Sometimes it feels like our students are living in a pen and paper classroom in what is a digital world. While we have digital stations with projectors, document cameras, and the latest touch screen laptops, my students are lacking in the latest hardware and software.
My class is a very diverse group of 28 5th graders.
Our school is a title one school with over 50% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Despite the challenges our school community faces, we have performed in the top 5% of all schools in the state of Washington on standardize tests. Our state scores continue to improve year after year because of the support of our principal, innovative staff, and hardworking students. Part of our success is making technology part of our daily experience.
My Project
One challenge with being so successful at our school is our population continues to grow every year. My class of 28 has a difficult time getting access to the computer labs. This year we have a new wonderful digital math program and I would love to have some of my students work on the enriching activities while others are finishing up their classwork. I use computers for everything from math to writing. Our reading incentive program requires a digital device to take tests. I do several research projects every year. With only two laptops in my classroom, this makes it very difficult. When I do get some time in the computer labs, we often need to bring an extra computer so that everyone has a work station. Having iPads in our classroom will help.
Having these iPads in our classroom will go a long way to giving my students the access they need to the programs that will make them successful this year.
They will be used often for research, learning, skill-building, and communication. Help us keep up digitally in these fast changing times!
