This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
George R.R. Martin writes, ''A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.'' Reading this nonfiction classic will give my students the opportunity to step briefly into the life of a person who may seem (on the surface) to be very different from themselves.
My high school juniors attend a high-achieving public charter school in a low-income urban area.
They are incredibly ambitious and hard-working, but they sometimes lack the outside resources to support them in their educational journey that more privileged students take for granted.
My Project
Having a complete set of copies of the memoir, The Woman Warrior, to read will afford my students the opportunity to read high-quality literature that will expand their notions of genre, culture, and history. A copy for every student means that we can have easier conversations (through having a common format) and will allow students to read at their own pace and in the way that helps them learn best.
Every contribution to this project helps to put high-quality literature into the hands of students who otherwise would not have access to it.
Reading and studying this text gives my students the opportunity to learn from the voice of a unique perspective in English literature, broadening their understanding of what it means to be an American.
