Living a Thousand Lives Through Books

My students need books that will help them explore diversity and build empathy for those different from themselves.

My Students

WGS is located on the lost coast of California, in an area that is so remote California Highway 1 stops before you reach it. This beautiful community school exists because the residents wanted their children to go to school in the same community in which they lived. The parents came together to build the school using their own resources and skills. It is a magical, forested setting located on the side of a mountain where everyone is family. The students have attended school together their entire lives, they know and love each other as only a family can.

My Project

My students are not familiar with a lot of the world and its differences because they live sheltered lives. My students need books to learn about the world. They need books to learn about themselves. My students need the opportunity to live outside of what is familiar to them. They need to read about the past and connect it to their futures.

George RR Martin says, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies; the man who never reads lives only one.” I want my students to have the opportunity to live as many lives as they possibly can.

I want them to see the world through as many different view points as I can provide for them.

The novels that I have requested are about experiences that my students can learn from. Some of the topics include the Holocaust, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam war, child slavery, and many more. By reading about these topics, students and their families will build empathy for others through engaging conversations about the topics discussed in these texts.
