My students need 8 headphones, 1 multi-headphone splitter in order for up to 5 students to listen to a story simultaneously, and 1 Apple iPod Nano to listen to stories.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As I wipe the dust off the 1970s-looking headphones and boom box, I think to myself, "If only my students could listen to stories in the 21st century!" The materials given are ancient and my students yearn to listen to their favorite stories. These requested items would help liven up our new center.
My students are a group of hard workers that strive to be on top.
One weakness I can foresee is their lack of love of reading. I want to show them that not only is reading useful, but fun and entertaining. As they grow up with working parents in a high poverty area while attending a school in the heart of it, it is understandable that they may not have the time or resources to fall into a book. With the new listening center, I plan to inspire my underexposed students to the beauty of listening to a story come to life as they play a movie in their minds.
My Project
My students will get to comfortably lay down on a cozy rug while listening to stories such as "The Tortoise and the Elephant" on the iPod Nano.
Not only can they listen to various fiction and non-fiction stories, but interviews, original student stories and poetry. The listening center will allow them to learn to focus as they increase their listening skills and learn to read with enthusiasm (who wants to listen to a monotone reader?). It will also help English Language Learners learn to correct diction and the English form of speaking, reading and eventually writing. This type of reading experience has more quality than just listening from a stereo. Sound effects, accents, and multiple narrators coming through their headphones will help young listeners begin to incorporate styles like this into their own reading and writing confidently. The headphone splitter will bring a unique experience of sharing a story with a friend and increase the learning experience for the entire classroom.
This project is something I believe in because I know my students are worth getting the best reading experience available despite their dismal surroundings and materials.
As various state and district tests are shoved in front of their faces, these students deserve to be exposed to the pleasures of listening to various audio forms that will better prepare them to become lifelong readers. The new listening center that you will help fund will not only help these students, but many more to come.
