Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 4th and 7th grade students will use classroom animals to help develop their skills of scientific observation and research. They will also develop presentation skills as they present research to classmates. Finally students will practice analysis skills as they compare data collected as well as a variety of gathered research. This will lead to the development of further questions for observaton and research. I will discuss the limits of our in class investigations because of fair treatment to animals; and 7th graders will discuss this ethical issue and invite a member of PETA to come talk with them to hear their views on animal use in research. This will also help students plan long term care for our class animals. Initial observation of animals will be for a month so student can develop questions. Second, students will do research to create a report based on their assigned animal. The 4th graders may work as teams; 7th graders will work individually because questions will be individual and their focus on research can be based on individual interest. It might be general research about the species, or more specific to the breed or care. Some students might research care and habitat; perhaps even creating a new habitat for our pet. This project will be inquiry based; so students will gather information based on their curiosity and learn concepts as they research and observe. Discussions will happen regularly in class based on observations so that students are helped as they try to formulate researchable questions. Students will present their research to the class as oral presentations with written reports to be posted for all students to read. Most have never had a pet. They will develop responsibility as students will be the caretakers of the animals, with my guidance. During the year students will take turns caring for the animals. I hope this will be the beginning of a small collection of animals for our science lab that engages students in the safe handling and care of living creatures. It should help make them more aware of the living creatures in their environment and how important proper habitat and environment is for their survival.
