Littlest Readers: Learn To Be Leaders

Help me give my students a dedicated reading library with tools that will support a calm and focused environment.

My Students

We have a very diverse group of students with varying backgrounds. My students come from both ends of the spectrum; students who just arrived in the country, and have never even seen a school before, and students that come in with two years of preschool. Some understand very little about the difference between a number and a letter. It is a challenging environment for all students to integrate and find ways to work together while meeting the diverse needs of these students.

They are excited to come to school every day and thrive on routine and structure.

They revel in the "a-ha" moments when suddenly all the pieces fit together. My students learn and follow the 7 Habits of Happy kids from the first day of kindergarten. They each have a leadership job within the classroom. The opening of each class is student-led. They are in every sense teaching and leading their peers in so many ways. They understand the importance of education and truly start to own their own learning. They work so hard to learn and grow every day.

My Project

Making sure students feel comfortable and safe is an essential component in keeping their engagement at an optimal level. I also know my students take on more challenging tasks when there is a dedicated space for each type of learning. A new space with a two-sided display bookshelf with comfortable chairs (easily cleaned) and rug will provide a quiet area for reading development.

In such a stressful and worrying time, I would love to give my students an "at-home" feeling when reading to themselves or with a buddy.

The text trackers, calm strips, kid-friendly eye pointers, and toobaloos are tools that help with higher engagement, concentration, and comfort as they build their literacy skills with a variety of books and readers.
