This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have old unlined whiteboards in our kindergarten class and though I've used permanent marker to line them, the lines get erased each time they use them!
My kindergarten students are all English Language Learners level 1.
Many of their parents are uneducated and illiterate. They range in age from those who just turned 5 years old, to 6 1/2 years old, because of being retained and repeating kindergarten. My school is a Title 1 school, in California, and all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. In February we will be starting a newly funded grant program which will provide breakfast to students in the classroom rather than optional in the cafeteria.
My Project
The dry erase whiteboards I am requesting are permanently lined on one side and unlined on the other side. This is great because they can be used for both language arts and math. In kindergarten students learn to write and form letters correctly by practicing within lined writing materials. Currently we use old whiteboards that are unlined and although I have tried lining them more than once, the lines erase and the boards don't allow the practice they need. Learning to form letters correctly in kindergarten is important for many reasons. As a teacher who has taught various grade levels besides kindergarten, I see a link between legible, correct letter formation and overall high achievement in all academic areas as children progress beyond kindergarten. In kindergarten, students take great pride in learning to write correctly. For some students this is the first stepping stone to seeing themselves as capable learners.
I believe that having the proper materials to teach is important.
Unlined whiteboards do not give young students the opportunity to learn how to write correctly within lines. Children develop pride in their abilities when they have mastered a skill. Learning to write is a skill that requires the correct materials. Whiteboards will not only provide them an opportunity to become skilled at writing, but also increase their self-esteem.
