Little Sprouts Growing Vegetables: Where Do We Get Our Food?

My students need indoor planters and a greenhouse to start growing their vegetable garden.

My Students

"What you see you can understand. What you understand you can love. And what you love you will protect." My students think the food they eat comes from the supermarket. They need to understand that they depend on the earth for their food and for their survival.

My students are first graders who come from very poor families.

They are eager to learn, but they often lack the resources to learn the same things as other children who come from more financially-sound homes. They face challenges every day that any adult would find daunting.

My Project

These gardening supplies will enable my students to explore how plants grow. Beyond that, it will give them a sense of accomplishment as they grow their own vegetables and eat them and a sense of community as they work together to provide food for the class. It also will give them an understanding of the importance of good nutrition and of conservation.

This project will give my students a chance to experience more than producing food.

It will give them a rare chance to build their self-confidence, which could give them a fighting chance to succeed against the overwhelming odds that they face everyday and break the cycle of poverty in their lives.
