My Project
I am the lead science teacher for our Elementary Center, and I teach all of the 5th grade students. Our district is in a low income, rural, economically depressed area of Pennsylvania. My students may be economically disadvantaged, but they deserve the same learning experiences as all other students across the United States.
Sixty-two percent of my students receive both free breakfast and lunch, as well as backpack food every weekend.
Our school runs this free food program because our students wouldn't have enough food to eat throughout the weekend break away from school if we didn't step in and supply it. Being a child today is not an easy task. Despite these many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they will be successful students.
I hope to provide my students with tractor-style stools as an option for their flexible seating tables. Allowing the students to have different seating choices will help them develop ownership of their learning space while also learning to make responsible decisions that best benefit them.
