Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In the classroom, science takes a backseat to literacy. I feel it should be equally as important. My class needs these resources so I can share the wonder of science with them. I want them investigating the world around them.
My students are from a Title 1 school with over 90% free or reduced lunch.
We are also a highly populated Hispanic community. Right from the start, my students have 2 strikes against them. As we are a Title 1 school, our resources are limited. Our science materials consist of a few magnifying glasses, some books, and magnets. I try to create some teacher-made materials, but we really need some quality science materials. Science is fun and exciting and I want to introduce my students to it.
My Project
My students would collect specimens in the test tubes and view them under the microscope. They would learn and understand the concept of gravity using the center kit. Learning the habits of the common ants through the ant farm, would fascinate them! They would also learn about insects while playing Bug Bingo. I would be able to expose them to more exciting experiments using activities from the Gooey book.
The opportunities in school for real hands-on scientific explorations are few.
A school needs to have resources to accomplish this. With these donated resources I have asked for, I could open up a world filled with exploration and never ending questions!
