Help me give my students paint, paper, modeling clay, and brushes to make science come off the page and into their hands.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a small Title I K-5 public school in New York City. Small schools mean even smaller budgets. My fifth grade students are creative, inquisitive, and eager to learn. I use hands-on projects to reinforce science and social studies units, but I often have to scale back or eliminate these projects due to lack of materials and art supplies.
When we incorporate art into science, I see my students be more engaged during the project and retain the information long after the unit ends.
When we add art, STEM becomes STEAM, and that change makes science accessible for kids that may otherwise be left behind.
My Project
STEAM is an educational initiative created by the Rhode Island School of Design that adds the arts to the original STEM framework. For our school it is even more important to combine art with core curriculum because we don't have funding for a dedicated art teacher.
It's one thing to read that the Sun is 109 times bigger than the earth, and quite another to create a "to scale" solar system.
The requested art supplies will support Solar System and Rainforest ecosystems science units by our fifth grade class. These projects will be included in the student portfolios that are part of the NYC Middle School application process.
Paint, paper, modeling clay, wire, all the art supplies changes science from words on a page something they can touch. What kid will pass up the chance to get their hands dirty? Our hands-on science projects will make a material difference in how my class retains the information. More importantly, it will inspire my students to be scientists and innovators, as the enter middle school and beyond.
