My Students
"Childhood should be a journey, not a race." is my classroom and live motto. I have a reputation for being an academic kindergarten teacher, but at the same time I have a very developmental philosophy. I believe that kindergarten children need time to play and explore in order to grow
My kindergrtners in the SRVUSD are a playful group of children.
They work hard and play hard. I've noticed that my group this year has two areas of strength and need: They are great artists, but they need support with their fine motor skills. And they need other mediums than just crayons and markers. Choice Time (a time of day when they get to choose a "play" activity) is their favorite part of the day because it is developmentally appropriate for them to play. But it is more than just play. Research proves that "play" is a time to problem solve, navigate through peer conflict and situations, and to work on cooperation and collaboration. In my classroom, we are missing one important piece to Choice Time - a painting easel. I know it would be busy everyday with children expressing themselves through art - little Picassos!
My Project
Imagine a classroom that allows children to have the choice and freedom to paint. And not only to paint, but to paint what they want, any way they want. Many times, teachers give children specific tasks during the day. The painting easel is a place for free expression. It is a place where children are in control and fill them with a sense of power while supporting their creativity.
In a time when the Arts are being sacrificed for budgetary reasons, it is more important than ever for children to stay engaged and interested in art.
A painting easel is age appropriate for 5 and 6 year olds. They feel successful while having fun and learning academic concepts such as color mixing, lines vs. curves, near and far, horizontal vs. vertical, and so much more. Children learn through play and the arts. Let's keep art alive in education.
