Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Audio books give an important introduction to listening and that is a skill that my students must master in order to learn to read. "In a world of distractions, listening deeply can open the door to everything that matters." "Speaking opens our mouths. Listening opens our minds."
Twenty-five students walk in my classroom every day.
They are Bilingual PreKindergartners in a Title I school. Most have no access to technology like computers, tablets, laptops, or cd players, in their homes. My students are the sweetest and funniest children a teacher could ever work with. Few of my students experience the pleasure of being read to at home. They need audio books. Audio books emphasize reading as a source of pleasure rather than a skill, and make children eager to learn how to read. Beyond their sheer enjoyment of audio books, children also develop a sense of narrative structure and understanding of language.
My Project
Children take great pleasure in listening to stories but they need the opportunity to have access to a selection of stories. If this project is funded, my students will have a book center. They will follow along as the narrator reads the story. Read Alouds are important because they enrich multi-sensory experiences with books. Hearing a book read on tape will help my students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. Listening to recorded books provides a model of fluent reading. Also, many books on tape have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children.
When listening to an audio book with a special friend, the opportunities for playing creatively and acting out parts of the story are endless.
There are many benefits to listening to recorded books.
Recorded books encourage reading for pleasure and independent reading, literacy, reading comprehension skills, listening comprehension skills. They also lead to auditory learning, increased vocabulary. Recorded books re especially helpful to English Language Learners.
