Little People, Big Feelings: Mental Health Tools for Early Elementary

My Project

I am an inclusion teacher for the entire 2nd grade at my school; my students need additional academic, behavioral and social/emotional instruction to be successful in the classroom. While most of my students have a specific learning deficit, each year more and more of my students need help to appropriately understand, articulate, and process their mental health needs. Tools for student who have inattention issues, sensory issues, social/emotional deficits, or even anger management issues can be difficult to locate and acquire in a rural public elementary school. We must address all the needs of our students in order to prepare them for the world beyond the shelter of our classroom.

Mental health needs for lower elementary students is a critical area that is often overlooked because many believe younger children are exempt from such things—this is sadly not the case.

Our students today have access to Artificial Intelligence (AI), a global community connected through wireless internet, and an ever-changing political landscape that they may know about but not adequately understand. If we as adults become frustrated and overwhelmed, how much more might these things affect a young child? It is imperative to give students the tools they need to correctly identify, process, and learn to regulate their emotions as early as possible. Many will not receive such instruction at home, and as with many things, the school must take on responsibilities that once belonged to the home and family so that we may have generations capable of leading us into the next millennia.
