My Students

It is my job as a Transitional Kindergarten teacher to bridge the gap between my students' preschool years and their elementary years. I prepare them both socially and academically for Kindergarten in a manner that is fun and captivating--but I need proper materials to get them there!

My Transitional Kindergarten students are a diverse bunch of children who are excited about learning and school.

We want to capitalize on this enthusiasm by using fun, exciting, new materials that will capture their imaginations and hearts. While 85% of our school is on free or reduced lunch, we draw children of different abilities and backgrounds from all over our urban area. Therefore, having fun while learning is not only a priority of mine, but a necessity to keep our varied group of children focused. Unfortunately, we have few supplies and materials because TK is a new program, and even fewer because Spanish materials at this level are rare (my class is one of the few in our big city that offers Transitional Kindergarten in Spanish). It is important to prepare students for a future in Spanish Immersion, but this can only be done with adequate materials and supplies.

My Project

In this current proposal I am asking for basic phonics materials so we can start our year getting to know letters and their sounds in basic, fun ways. The Spanish Alphabet books (one for each letter) have beautiful pictures on each page which will inspire even our shyest of children to express themselves orally, and hopefully, later, in written form. The Spanish Alphabet Teaching Tubs are even more exciting to use. Each one contains items starting with each letter of the alphabet that children can feel and play with. The physical interaction with materials will help foster knowledge and memory so the children can better understand how to use the sounds of each letter. This will provide an excellent base on which to base the rest of their phonemic awareness skills!

Literacy skills begin with awareness of letters and their sounds (phonemic awareness).

There is no better way to gain this awareness than with interesting things for children to look at and feel in their hands. The connections my student will make while using these materials will support their learning and set them up for success throughout their school careers! Thank you so much for taking the time to read the proposal and for giving any amount that you can to our classroom!
