Help me give my students a listening center to encourage reading and support fluency!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Van Scoyoc's classroom raised $387

My Students
In a low-income community where more than half of the students have free or reduced-price lunch, not every child has the opportunity to attend preschool. Kindergarten is the first experience many students get with schools! My kindergarten students came to school excited to start their life-long adventure of learning and I hope to build a strong foundation for their education.
Listening to reading encourages students to try difficult texts, build a larger vocabulary, and increase fluency!
My students enjoy text variety with different themes and reading levels. An independent listening center will allow students access to engaging and desired texts to become fluent, confident readers with an expanded vocabulary.
I teach an inclusion class and some of my students respond better to using headphones to silence out noise so they can focus on the text. Our current listening center is old and messes up frequently, but this particular group of students continue to ignore the outdated technology and try to enjoy this center.
My Project
Listening to reading is not only exciting and engaging for little readers, it is a big tool for supporting reading fluency. When students do not have someone to read to them or a reading buddy many of them are limited to the types and levels of texts they can read.
A listening center provides the opportunity for these children to be exposed to a large variety of texts and grow a passion for reading!
Children should not be limited to texts on their independent reading levels. They enjoy independent reading but they also enjoy books with harder words, longer stories, and vocabulary that makes them curious.
I currently have an outdated listening center since I began my journey in education 8 years ago. It barely works and the students spend a lot of time adjusting knobs and fiddling with wires, but it is still one of their favorite literacy stations. I have many audio sets which I change out frequently to keep their interest. I do not have a Dr. Seuss set and I think the children would love to listen to and read along with his books, especially during Read Across America!
Please help me bring life back to my listening center and library. These children do so much at this center to benefit their literacy skills. They practice their understanding of concepts of print, read and listen to text, admire different styles of reading and writing, and laugh with each other as they enjoy the adventures of reading!
