Help me give my students their own mini book library. It has been such a struggle to help my students reach their reading potential without allowing them to touch and read physical books.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When my students walk in the room in the morning, their smiling faces let me know they are ready and excited to learn! In my classroom, I have a diverse group of learners. About half of my students are students with special needs. Most of these children with special needs are also English Language Learners. Being the special education teacher in the room, I know that there are so many ways technology can help them. Unfortunately, most of these children do not have access to technology because they come from low-income homes. Most, if not all, of the students in my school receive free lunch.

My Project

Creating these mini libraries will help my students to enjoy reading more. My students are so eager to learn, but are quickly growing bored of the online libraries that we are using for independent reading time. My co-teacher and I wish that we were able to give them physical books to read.

"I gave them some brand new Elephant and Piggie books to hold, and they just didn't want to put them down." They wanted to hold on to the books for the rest of the day because, it was something that they were not used to and was new and exciting for them.

It's such a shame that we do not have enough books for the students to keep some with them to read in school and at home.

Creating these mini libraries for each student will help bring the love of reading alive for my little first graders! In such a weird and crazy time in this world, these libraries would bring some normalcy back to my students.
