My Students
My students learn best when learning together. Having multiple copies of instructional level books will allow this to happen.
I teach in a high poverty, urban school where most all the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Families often struggle to meet basic needs. I do not want those struggles to carry over into the classroom. My students are as deserving as any other students anywhere.
My Project
Many of my students start the year with limited exposure to books and limited experience with reading. Few, if any, are reading on grade level. I need multiple copies of leveled texts at students' instructional reading levels so we can practice building fluency together. These books are a combination of fiction and non-fiction texts, so while practicing our reading skills, we are also able to learn content area curriculum.
Having multiple copies of leveled texts will allow me to work in small groups building reading fluency.
It's great to read with a partner, but it's also important for tracking text to have a copy of the book for each student.
