My Students
I am an EC teacher who works at a high risk Project Lift School that has mostly minorities and ESL (English as a second language) students. My school is a PreK - 8th grade school in an urban area of North Carolina and nearly all of our students are living in poverty. I work with a selection of First grade and Middle School Special Education students in Science, Social Studies and Reading. Many of my students are below grade level readers and ESL students who have physical and cognitive disability, difficulties learning complex material, vocabulary, fluency, sight word recognition, reading issues and many other learning issues. The students I work with are trying to succeed while coping with a variety of learning, speech, physical and cognitive disabilities. My students are all working at different levels when it comes to reading and comprehension. Despite all these challenges, they are here every day and working hard to be the best that they can be!
Some of my students are on a Pre-K level when they are suppose to me at a mid level First grade.
My students are all on different academic levels and have physical and cognitive disability, difficulties learning complex material, vocabulary, fluency, sight word recognition, reading issues and many other learning issues. The students I work with are trying to succeed while coping with these issues. They are trying to catch up with the other students their age and grade level while also trying not to fall further behind.
My Project
The materials I’m requesting will be used with my first grade EC group. I started a group with just 6 students. It has worked so well that I have had to add more students to the group. These materials will be used to provide extra support for students in their class, as well as in reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, sight word recognition, word and letter differentiation, word family’s sounds and many other learning issues. This will be provided in the EC learning office. This is the office where I take the students to work on our lessons and their goals. Here students can work on and improve their reading skills, vocabulary, fluency, recognition and comprehension, and other issues on their own levels and not have to feel like they are competing with their fellow classmates. The EC learning office helps provide the individualized education that students with learning and cognitive disabilities need.
I am requesting Kindle Fire’s and headphones for my students to help with their literacy support that i provide inside the EC office. After my face to face instruction with the students they will then get on the Kindles and work on reading programs specific to their learning. This will assist with the re-iteration of my core lesson with the students. Kindle Fires are also smaller for smaller hands and lighter to handle than a laptop or Chromebook. This will help ensure less damage to the Kindles. That is why i'm also requesting the Kindle cases. The cases will also assist in the
When it comes to reading and comprehension having the necessary materials and books for the appropriate levels that the students are on allows myself and the student’s access to a variety of learning conditions at each student’s level.
This helps them develop the skills that they are struggling in like fluency, vocabulary, word recognition. We are working hard to ensure that in two years, 90% of our students will be reading on grade level. I expect each of my students to be successful. I cannot ask them to meet my high expectations without the tools that are needed to succeed. I want to let my students know that I care about their education and expects them to succeed in school by supplying them with the proper supplies and materials that they need. Without the correct supplies, they may not be able to complete the lessons at hand or have what they need to have the most successful school year that they can.
