it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a special education teacher in a Title I priority school. This means that there is very little funding; yet, we have a high need for materials to support instruction. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. These challenges do not stop them from participating in class with a bright smile and an eagerness to learn something new.
I love how curious my students are about the world around them and how much they love school and learning!
My students are a diverse group of learners that bring a variety of cultures into the classroom. They all bring a unique personality and a strong desire for learning. In our class, we focus on a growth mindset, fostering positive relationships with our peers, and choosing kindness above everything else. This year brought upon some of the most difficult challenges yet, but my students showed perseverance and remarkable achievement through the school year. Their eagerness to learn is what keeps me motivated.
My Project
Many of my students’ families have been affected by this pandemic and kids are struggling with their emotions and anxiety. Going back to school can bring a whole bunch of feelings. Anxiety, nervousness, and fidgeting are some emotions that many of my kiddos feel when coming back to school and even on a daily basis. These fidget tools like the bouncy bands, yoga balls, and pop-its help calm those nerves or soothe anxiety.
Fidgets create movement which is alerting to the brain.
The brain stem is what alerts us and helps us stay regulated. The brain needs to wake up and stay awake when expected to attend. These simple sensory beads, bouncy bands, and pop-its can help them stay focused during the day and keep their mind from wandering. Also, scented oils and a yoga ball to keep them calm when dysregulated. In giving them tools to use as they sit at their desks, they will increase productivity and focus. This will help them decrease time off task and inappropriate behaviors.
