My Students
Do you remember sifting through the sand at the beach? Searching for buried treasure? Exploring the feeling of the sand at your fingertips? I want to give the same experience to the students in my class!
My students are a group of 26 ELL (English language learners) kindergarten children from a school in a suburban Michigan city.
We are five years old, and we love school. Most of the children in my class have not had the privilege of going to preschool, and nearly all of them receive free lunch.
My Project
My kindergarteners LOVE to explore! What 5 and 6 year old doesn't? I am requesting a sand and water table, along with some sand, kidfetti and sand tools. The sensory exploration is just what my littler learners need.
Unfortunately, with the push down curriculum I am seeing, it is that much more necessary for me to meet the developmental needs of my children. I strongly believe that children learn through a variety of modals. Many of my little ones this year are very tactile and even more of them need to be up and moving. The use of a sand table will give my students the opportunity to explore and use their senses. I will be able to use the sand toys to teach the concepts of volume and measurement. I will also be able to instill the important skill of turn taking.
Your support of this project would mean that I would ensure that I will be able to meet the needs of all of my students.
Not only will they learn important mathematical and scientific concepts, but also important social skills that they will need later on in life.
