This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class has a steady hum of activity. I want my students to feel so caught up in learning that they are not even aware that learning is going on. To reach my diverse learners I draw upon strategies that promote active engagement so that all my students can participate to their fullest potential.
My Kindergarteners love learning, and why wouldn't they?
It's contagious! My young scholars are in a dual language program where all students are learning English and Spanish. My class is made up of English language learners and native English speakers. What I love about teaching dual language kindergarten is that the program fosters bilingualism, biliteracy, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages-50% of our day is English and 50% is Spanish.
Our students are also developing an awareness and appreciation of the diversity and uniqueness of individuals. As a school, we are 86% economically disadvantaged and most receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
My students are learning to love reading! They need these puppets, felt cutouts, and storyboard to provide visuals for their learning and promote student engagement. The puppets will help students "voice" their participation as storyteller, to work on summarizing and retelling, asking questions, clarifying their learning, and making predictions.
This learning through play will provide the learning reinforcement they need as they retell stories that they love!
Each puppet has a role and students can use them as they engage in different comprehension strategies. The felt board and story cut outs allow my students to practice retelling and summarizing the story.
