Little Guys Read

My students need a collection of 25 books including "Jason: Quest for the Golden Fleece, a Greek Myth" and "Thor & Loki: In the Land of Giants: A Norse Myth Jeff" to engage and encourage young men to read.

My Students

They say that the gap is widening between boys and girls reading. According to some research, boys don't like to read. But according to Jon Scieszka's website, boys will read if they are given something that they are interested in.

I am the proud teacher of 32 fourth graders who are full of wonder and curiosity.

More than 50% of my students are boys with a majority of them reading below grade level. My class is funny, dynamic, and eager to learn and I want to provide them with books that, though geared for the young men in my class, can benefit all of them.

My Project

The books I have chosen for this project are books that have been reviewed by young men, for young men. Using Author Jon Scieszka's site, www.guysread.com, I have created a list of books that will engage and inspire my class to read. The books are about adventure, mystery, with more than a few that have explosions! My ultimate goal is to make life long readers out of, not just the boys, but my entire class. I would also like them to review these books and submit them on to Mr. Scieszka's site to help motivate other young men to read.

Closing the gap for all kids is a goal we as educators all share.

One way to achieve that goal is to encourage young men to read and have them encourage their peers. Through reading, so many other academic doors are opened.
