Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to school to learn tons of fun and amazing things! My goal is to share experiences with them that they would otherwise not have the chance to experience because of their diverse backgrounds. They come from a low socioeconomic (low SES) background, are recipients of free and reduced lunch and are all English Language (EL). Every day they must overcome adversity to reach their goals.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are very important, even in a Kindergarten classroom.

I believe that my students, even though they are labeled "at-risk", "low SES", "EL", should be afforded the same opportunities as those without those labels. Not only this, but they are NOT too young to start learning about STEM and integrating STEM projects into their learning and lives. My classroom is where they come to learn new and exciting things, especially about STEM. Everyday they can learn a little bit more about STEM, problem solving, and thinking outside the box. They deserve the chance to succeed in world that revolves around STEM.

My Project

Younger aged students have always been very interested in building, whether it is a castle, cars, people, or mazes, etc. They are our little engineers. I would like foster their need to build at a young age, to hopefully continue into their later educational experiences.

STEM has come to the forefront of the educational needs of our students, especially our minority students.

Less and less engineers are graduating from US colleges and universities. We have gotten away from our students' need to "play" or "explore", thus taking away the need for different types of building materials in the classroom.

I would like to give my students the opportunity to "play" and "explore" using different types of building materials. These materials will be used to implement STEM centers on a daily basis. The STEM centers will work on a rotation basis, where students will either have a free explore type build, use a card with a picture to build a specific object, or create a town/city with certain parameters for several rotating students to add on to their creation. I will orally give students an objective, and they will be assessed on who meets the objective, ie. tallest object, and hold a certain item, etc. Allowing my students to have these hands on opportunities will enhance students' ability to use science, technology, engineering and math principals, analyze data, and problem solve. Not only are they playing and exploring, but collaborating and problem solving with their peers. This will enhance their resumes as students, and prepare them for the rest of their educational careers.
