Little Drums for Little Ones

My Students

Welcome to Music and Movement class! Here, we sing songs and play movement games from many cultures. I also want to teach my students how to play instruments. However, this is only the first year we have a full-blown music program, so we don't yet have many drums to play.

My students come to my class ready to sing, play, dance and create.

I teach at a public all-girls school in a large city, and my students are mostly African-American or Hispanic. Many of them are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Despite their socioeconomic disadvantages, though, my students are eager to make music and they are motivated to learn. They love to perform, and through the study of music they develop their identities and connect with their own cultures.

My Project

Even when there is no music room at a school, students should be given the opportunity to play instruments. I will be pushing in to classrooms with a teaching cart, so portable instruments like these hand drums and tubanos are key. They will learn to accompany world music with steady beats and rhythms, they will eventually perform rhythmic accompaniment from written music notation, and they will improvise to express their own musicianship. The students will learn proper technique with mallets on the hand drums and hands on the tubanos. They will also get practice taking turns so that everyone has the opportunity to play. This will develop patience and sharing skills.

By donating to this project, you will help me begin to build the music program at my school from the ground up.

They have not had a full-time music teacher before now, and I am excited to create a program tailored to their needs. With just these few drums, we can begin a unit on instrumental music and learn about rhythms as well. We will also work on sharing and taking turns, essential skills for elementary students to learn.
