My Project
If you've ever had the opportunity to read Maya Angelou's masterpiece I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, you know how powerful this pivotal memoir can touch one's soul. Angelou's memoir captures the longing of lonely children and the brute insult of bigotry through her bewitching prose.
I've wanted to share this story with my continuation high school students for some time because I know they will relate to Angelou's experiences and will hopefully be inspired by her perseverance.
Our unit on this book asks students two essential questions: what are "little boxes" and how do these little boxes affect the individual? How can and should we navigate a culture that attempts to define us? Through our reading and study of this memoir, my hope is that students will gain a deeper understanding to themselves and find their identity in a world that tells them to suppress certain parts of themselves.
