Little Book Buddies, Not Bullies!

My Students

Falling in love with reading can spark with just the right book or a character who speaks to you in the right way. Our buddy reading program adds the extra element of having our "upper classmen" read side-by-side to their little buddies. Anti-bully books will elevate this experience even more.

We are a New York City Public School in Queens, where nearly 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch.

As a successful early childhood school, we provide a nurturing, yet rigorous community of learning. Our Pre-K through Grade 3 students are encouraged to think critically and explore through a hands-on, process-based curriculum. Literacy is integrated into all curriculum areas. Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating: - English Language Learners (ELL students) - English as a Second Language (ESL students) - Students with Special Needs - General Education students Our diverse community is quite international with almost 70% of our students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communications to parents in 4 home languages [English, Chinese, Spanish, Korean].

My Project

Last year, our school started a buddy reading program that we are all excited about continuing. Every week my Third Grade students spend dedicated time reading to their First Grade buddies. This side by side reading time already benefits the younger and older students. It's truly rewarding to see our students EXCITED TO READ. We want to ENCOURAGE that growing love of reading. I am requesting a 6' x 9' reading rug for the kids to sit comfortably for buddy and independent reading time. Also, I think a variety of anti-bully books will be very important stories for our students to read together. These 12 books include "Nobody Knew What to Do," "Stop Bullying Me! I'm a Zombie. So What?" and "My Secret Bully". All of the requested titles approach this serious issue from a different direction. The variety will address the range of emotions involved & foster important discussion. "Bullying in Schools" will also help our students' parents better understand the problem.

My students know the younger kids look up to them & this buddy reading experience will provide even more reason for them to lead by example.

Thank you for supporting early literacy and anti-bullying projects. This program will enhance literacy skill sets and character education for my students and for their little buddies!
