Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach Kindergarten at San Miguel Elementary. The majority of our school population is comprised of English language learners. I strive to provide students with meaningful English language instruction. I use music in the classroom daily to reinforce concepts, to learn English and I give opportunities for make-believe play and artistic expression. Engagement in activities such as singing, dancing, painting and coloring have helped children develop self-esteem and self-confidence. Due to budget cuts, as well as the daily demands of presenting an academically rigorous curriculum, my 5 year olds have been left without the opportunity to be challenged creatively. Using art as a means to teach children to speak, read and write can be very powerful. Encouraging them to be authors, illustrators and artists is exciting for young children. More importantly, they will acquire the knowledge that they need to be academically successful. The art instruction children will receive will further develop their vocabulary, their comprehension, reading and writing skills across the curriculum. Incorporating art into the curriculum would be easy to do with a few basic supplies. I will need crayons, markers, colored pencils, paint, paint brushes, water colors and special paper for children to create their works of art. These few basic art supplies will enable children to grow creatively, artistically and academically.
