My Students

My students love to escape in time and place into the many places great literature takes them. I can read to them, but when they have those adventure-filled pages in their own hands, they experience it even more.

Our school is a title 1 school, which has been recently effected by the March tornado.

These kids need exposure to great literature and a way to escape. They love reading about different cultures and time periods. When we finish one book, they want to know what we're reading next.

My Project

My students will be able to experience great literature, such as "The Hundred Penny Box" and "Dear Austin: Letters from the Underground Railroad Elvira Wo", as a class and in small groups. We will respond to this literature in a variety of different ways. We will explore the history in each book as an extension of the reading experience. We will create art as a response.

They will have the shared experience to add to their life experiences.

They will increase their reading ability as well as their knowledge about different cultures and periods in history.
