This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first grade students may be young, but they are brimming with potential and the motivation to learn. Two areas of focus in my classroom this year have been on building culture through social-emotional learning, and building strong foundational literacy skills.

Talking about racial justice and diversity has been incredibly eye-opening as I realize the capacity my students have to empathize and understand complicated topics deeply rooted in history.

As an educator, I believe in building up social-emotional skills (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making), so that they may be able to better empathize and connect with people who may have different backgrounds than them. My students belong to a homogeneous minority population, and I want them to understand their identities strongly, while also exposing them to a diverse society.

My Project

These books will serve as really important starting points to spark conversation about diversity and racial equity. They would expose my students to diverse voices and experiences they may not realize in their direct communities.

I envision that through these interactive read-alouds, my students will become more socially aware of the complexities behind racial issues that may directly or indirectly affect them as children of color.

Some foundational skills they need in order to access these conversations are: being able to recognize their own feelings of discomfort (if and when they come up), regulate those feelings, and build strong relationships with each other through empathy.
