My students are my family. They are of different races, and ethnic backgrounds. Some are from the poverty level. They are English language learners coming from different countries all over the world. The children speak one or several languages. They come to me to learn English and become proficient readers and writers.
I cannot describe how special they are.
Many of my students are newcomers to this country. They came to our beautiful city for a better life and a better chance for success. Every day, they come to school with enthusiasm like no other. They want to learn English and they try to master complex subjects without speaking the language or knowing the key academic vocabulary needed to achieve academic success. Every day they ask what words mean and how to become better readers and writers.
My Project
Reading books increase vocabulary and helps students to be enriched in a world of wonderful literature. Reading books helps to activate schema as well as build language skills. English language learners need to be able to read literature they can relate to, as well as building their reading and writing skills.
Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are the four components that help our English language learners become more fluent in their new language.
In this way, reading books they are interested in will build their conversation skills as well as their vocabulary database. Reading really is the key to academic language.
